Overview

This qualification prepares students to work in peer support roles within the mental health sector. It is designed for people who have lived experience of mental health challenges—either as a consumer or a carer—and who want to use that experience to support others in their recovery.

Students learn how to provide person-centered support, facilitate self-advocacy, assist with recovery-oriented programs, and work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams. They also develop strong communication skills while maintaining professional boundaries and self-care strategies.

Graduates may work in community mental health services, non-government organizations, residential facilities, peer-run programs, or other support settings where lived experience is valued.

To enroll in this course, applicants should submit:

  • Completed and signed 'International Student Application Form'
  • Certified transcripts of all academic achievements, including secondary school education
  • Certified evidence of date of birth/Passport
  • Certified evidence of English language proficiency
  • Submit evidence that meets the Genuine Temporary Entrant criteria (Only for Offshore Applications)
  • Minimum Age Requirement: 18 years of age
  • Provide evidence of Health and Insurance Requirements
  • Provide evidence of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) / Credit Transfer (CT)

At Job Training Institute (JTI), our CRICOS-registered courses are delivered through 20 hours of structured, face-to-face instruction per week at our City campus. Course delivery is supported by interactive classroom activities, practical sessions, and limited online components, ensuring that teaching methods meet the learning outcomes and competency standards of each qualification.

 

This delivery model complies with:

  • Standards for RTOs 2015 (Clauses 1.2 and 1.3), which require training and assessment to be delivered effectively and by qualified trainers;
  • ESOS Act 2000 and National Code 2018 (Standard 7), ensuring CRICOS courses are delivered in accordance with approved course hours and teaching modes, and that students receive appropriate support to achieve course outcomes;
  • CRICOS registration requirements, which mandate clear documentation of study hours, contact time, and teaching methods for international students.

Students’ learning is further supported with resources, practical exercises, and guidance to facilitate competency achievement in line with ASQA and CRICOS compliance obligations.

This qualification includes 80 hours of vocational placement in a mental health peer work environment. Placement provides students with the opportunity to:

  • Apply lived experience in real peer support roles
  • Practice recovery-oriented communication and support strategies
  • Work collaboratively with mental health professionals and community services
  • Build confidence and practical skills for employment in the sector

All placement arrangements must meet regulatory and organizational requirements before commencement, and students must be deemed suitable for placement to ensure safety and professional standards.

Additional Placement Requirements:

  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid certification (as per provider requirements)
  • National Police Check issued within the last 12 months
  • COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate (minimum two doses)
  • Annual Influenza Vaccination (if applicable)

JTI does not guarantee the following:

  • That a learner will successfully complete a training product on our scope of registration. Learners need to put effort in their study and completion of assignments and JTI will provide the trainers and required resources to enable the learner to successfully complete their study.
  • A training product can be completed in a manner which does not meet the requirements of clause 1.1 and 1.2 of VET Standards 2015, e.g. in a shorter period of time than the AQF specifications.
  • A learner will obtain a particular employment outcome where this is outside the control of JTI. JTI is a training organisation and has no control of employment outcomes.

  • The course is delivered in line with ASQA Standards for RTOs 2015, the ESOS Act 2000, and the National Code 2018 to ensure international students receive high-quality education and support.
