Overview

This qualification reflects the role of workers who provide services to clients in relation to mental health issues. They can provide counselling, referral, advocacy and education/health promotion services. These workers are required to have high level specialist knowledge, skills and competencies especially in regard to laws affecting people with mental health issues, the range of services available to them and health issues related to mental health.

This qualification reflects the role of professionals who support individuals experiencing mental health challenges. Graduates learn to provide counselling, referrals, advocacy, and health promotion services within a mental health context.

The course develops high-level specialist knowledge and skills, including an understanding of mental health laws, available community and health services, and the relationship between mental and physical wellbeing.

To enrol in this course, applicants should submit:

  • Completed and signed 'International Student Application Form'
  • Certified transcripts of all academic achievements, including secondary school education
  • Certified evidence of date of birth/Passport
  • Certified evidence English language proficiency
  • Submit evidence that meets the Genuine Temporary Entrant criteria (Only for Offshore Applications)

At Job Training Institute (JTI), our CRICOS-registered courses are delivered through 20 hours of structured, face-to-face instruction per week at our City campus. Course delivery is supported by interactive classroom activities, practical sessions, and limited online components, ensuring that teaching methods meet the learning outcomes and competency standards of each qualification.

This delivery model complies with:

  • Standards for RTOs 2015 (Clauses 1.2 and 1.3), which require training and assessment to be delivered effectively and by qualified trainers.
  • ESOS Act 2000 and National Code 2018 (Standard 7), ensuring CRICOS courses are delivered in accordance with approved course hours and teaching modes, and that students receive appropriate support to achieve course outcomes.
  • CRICOS registration requirements, which mandate clear documentation of study hours, contact time, and teaching methods for international students.

Students’ learning is further supported with resources, practical exercises, and guidance to facilitate competency achievement in line with ASQA and CRICOS compliance obligations.

To successfully complete this course, students are required to complete a minimum of 400 hours of supervised work placement in a suitable community services or mental health setting. JTI’s Work Placement Coordinator, trainers, and the student will work together to arrange an appropriate placement opportunity.

Students who are already employed in the community services sector should speak with their trainer to determine whether their current workplace is suitable to meet the placement requirements for this qualification.
